The device has receiving unit receiving signals of an external control device, which indicates an existence of favorable time intervals. An automatic control device activates a consumer during a favorable time interval and deactivates the consumer outside the favorable time interval. A selection device is provided for determining whether the automatic control device is to be used or not. An external receiver indicates whether the automatic control device of the consumer is activated or not. A display is formed by multi-color light emitting diodes according to a type of traffic light. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a device for optimizing an energy consumption of a consumer in connection with an external control unit and an external receiver.
