The unit (1) has a tubular housing (2) in which an electromagnetically actuated valve (32) is provided in connection between partial chambers (13, 14). Another valve in the housing connects the chamber (13) with an equalization chamber (17). A valve (37) e.g. check valve, in the housing connects the chambers (14, 17). The valve (37) and the latter valve are formed such that the chamber (17) is connected with the chamber (13) or chamber (14) when the valve (32) is opened in which a low pressure prevails in the chamber (14) than in the chamber (13) due to shifting movement of a piston rod (6).
