The method involves locking and unlocking a motor vehicle by an inner locking device and/or two mobile authentication units. An engine of the vehicle is started by a start switch if one of the units is provided in an effective area of an antenna of a control unit arranged in the vehicle and registered as unlocked and driving-authorized in the control unit. The other authentication units are registered as temporarily locked during locking. The temporarily locked authentication units are registered as unlocked during unlocking.
