PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of surface coated cermet with a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance in high-speed intermittent cutting.;SOLUTION: The hard coating layer formed by vapor deposition on the surface of a tool substrate consists of (a) a lower layer which is a Ti compound layer comprising one or two or more layers out of a TiC layer, TiN layer, TiCN layer, TiCO layer and a TiCNO layer and having a total average layer thickness of 3-20 μm, and (b) an upper layer which is an Al2O3 layer having an average layer thickness of 1-15 μm, having an α-type crystal structure in a chemical vapor-deposited state, and showing specific constituent atom shared lattice point distribution graph when measuring the distribution of constituent atom sharing lattice points by a specific method using a field emission type scanning electron microscope.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
