The device has a magnetic target (100) integrated to a camshaft and provided with opposite magnetic poles (105-112) having different angular amplitudes, where the magnetic target is made of plastoferrite material. A bipolar magnetic field sensor (115) e.g. Hall effect switch sensor, is placed with respect to the magnetic target and detects magnetic field generated by each pole provided with respect to the sensor. The switch detects zero crossing of the magnetic field surrounding the sensor.
