The engine has a piston (11) slidably mounted in a cylinder (10), and a cylinder head (12) closing the cylinder by delimiting a combustion chamber (13) between a wall of the head and the piston. An injector (14) injects fuel in the form of jets in the combustion chamber. A preheater plug (15) heats a surface inside the chamber. The piston has a bowl shaped cavity (110) for deflecting and delivering the fuel jets towards the preheater plug. The plug has a flat heating surface (150) located parallel to the wall of the cylinder head.
