The mechanism has a nut forming part (3) mounted between outer hallow and inner full cylindrical screw forming parts (1, 2). A threaded outer surface of the part (3) and a threaded inner surface of the part (1) form a helical channel receiving balls (4). A threaded inner surface of the part (3) and a threaded outer surface of the part (2) form another helical channel receiving balls (5). The channels are formed such that one of the parts (1, 2) is animated with a rotation movement to drive the part (3) in translation movement causing rotation movement of another one of the parts (1, 2). An independent claim is also included for a steering assembly comprising a steering column.
