PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy in specifying a position, at which any failure occurs, when the failure occurs. PSOLUTION: In a computer network 10, a plurality of LANs 12 whose real structure is unknown when watched from a failure monitoring apparatus 36, are interconnected and a plurality of routers 28 are provided for updating routing information through dynamic routing. In a state where any failure does not occur yet, the routing information of each router 28 is stored in the failure monitoring apparatus 36 as reference information, and the failure monitoring apparatus 36 collects the routing information from each of the routers 28 and compares it with the reference information. In the case where the number of specific path information items to be monitored is decreased, in accordance with whether transmission destation information in the remaining path information has been changed or not, notification contents of failure occurrence are switched (failure on partial path/path detour occurrence), thereby improving accuracy in specifying a position at which any failure occurs.
