In the present invention, there is disclosed the use of sapogenin derivatives of the general formula I or II, wherein Ri1, Ri2, Ri4, Ri5, Ri6, Ri7, Ri8, Ri10 represent independently on each other hydrogen, OH, =O or OR, where R is an optionally substituted alkyl, an optionally substituted acyl, an optionally substituted carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl; Ri3 denotes hydrogen, =O or OR, where R is an optionally substituted alkyl, an optionally substituted acyl, an optionally substituted carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl; Ri9, Ri12, Ri11, Ri13 can represent hydrogen, OH or OR, where R is an optionally substituted alkyl, an optionally substituted acyl, an optionally substituted carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl; Ri14 denotes an optionally substituted alkyl group; Ri15 represents hydrogen, an optionally substituted alkyl, an optionally substituted acyl or glucosyl; and ..... denotes an optionally double bond; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof for the preparation of a medicament intended for improving cognitive function or for treating cognitive dysfunction. Preferably, said medicament is intended for treating AlzheimerÆs disease or senile dementia.
