摘要
Ammonia was toxic to aquatic life even at very small quantities(1.5mg/L), where Visakhapatnam steel plant is discharging alarming amounts of ammonia through its effluents in to the sea( Bay of Bengal). Several other industries in Vizag discharge ammonia through their effluents into sea. Our aim was to remove ammonia by nonpathogenic microorganisms and I have previously isolated a Bacillus sp -1 which was patented already (could remove ammonia from steel plant effluent) in the year 2005. Recently I have isolated few more microbes with ammonia removing capacity. These microbes were tested with Nessler's method( Russian's method of Nesslerization as it was followed by Visakhapatnam steel plant lab technicians) for removal of ammonia from different tanks of steel plant effluents with different amounts of ammonia. (Tables. 1-6). The microbes isolated by me at this time were identified as bacteria ( different types of Bacillus sp-2-5), fungi and Actinomycetes sp( Table7). These microbes can be used to remove ammonia from other industries where ammonia is present and also in agricultural and municipal wastes having ammonia as pollutant.
