CULTURE VESSEL FOR GROWING OR CULTURING CELLS, CELLULAR AGGREGATES, TISSUES AND ORGANOIDS AND METHODS FOR USING SAME

A bioreactor system (figure 4) for culturing cells, cellular aggregates,tissues and organoids and methods of usingsame includes a cylindrical reactor vessel (10) having an unobstructedlongitudinal axis that is rotated about that horizontal axis tosuspend cells and/or tissue in a culture medium. Filters (36) are used withinthe vessel to retain the cells and/or tissues within theculture chamber (30) and may be also used to subdivide the culture chamber(30). A pump (3) maintains a flow of oxygen rich culturemedium through the vessel (10) to sustain cell respiration. Several methods ofoperating the bioreactor system are disclosed whereinthe vesel is used to culture cells, to grow three dimensional cellularaggregates and tissues, to filter waste materials and toxins fromfluids, to commercially produce various biological materials from cells and/ortissue, and as a diagnostic or research tool.
