This invention relates to a process for converting a carbonaceous material toa desired product comprising one ormore hydrocarbons or one or more alcohols, the process comprising: (A)gasifying the carbonaceous material at a temperature inexcess of about 700°C to form synthesis gas; and (B) flowing thesynthesis gas in a microchannel reactor in contact with a catalystto convert the synthesis gas to the desired product.
