The present invention provides mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of heart diseases in a mammal, characterized in that the treatment comprises an administration of the MSCs or a pharmaceutical preparation comprising MSCs and that before the administration lesions are introduced into the myocardium of said mammal, wherein said lesions do not essentially impair the function of said myocardium. The present invention also provides MSCs for the provision of a biological cardiac pacemaker in a mammal. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method for controllably introducing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the myocardial tissue of a mammal, comprising the steps of: a) providing a pharmaceutical preparation comprising MSCs to be introduced into said mammal, b) introducing lesions into the myocardium of said mammal, wherein said lesions do not essentially impair the function of said myocardium, and c) infunding said pharmaceutical preparation comprising MSCs into said mammal. The present invention further relates to a method for providing a biological cardiac pacemaker in a mammal, a method for treating a pacemaker dysfunction and/or a degenerative disease of the sinoatrial and/or atrioventricular node in the myocardium, and related complications and conditions in a mammal on the basis of said method for controllably introducing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the myocardial tissue of a mammal.
