Diagnostic system with consistent focusing of the diagnostic program on the functionally oriented selection of the potential fault candidates. For a function which is suspected to have a fault, the components which are involved in the function are firstly determined and combined to form a set of possible fault candidates. A functional run is then started with the diagnostic program and the behaviour or the state of each component of the set of candidates is determined. In this context, each component has the following state: function of the component not checked, - function of the component checked and fault free, - function of the component prevented or aborted, - function of the component faulty.
