A METHOD FOR PRIMARY AND BACKUP LINKS PROTECTION IN PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK AND A RING-BASED SYSTEM

A method for primary and backup links protection in passive optical network (PON) and a ring-based system are disclosed. The method includes establishing ring-based PON between at least two optical line terminals OLT through at least two user side edge nodes or network side edge nodes, each of the OLTs connecting with any other OLT through at least two edge nodes. In the ring-based PON, existing two links clockwise and counterclockwise, any one of them is a primary link and the other is a backup link. When the primary link is normal, any node in the ring-based PON receives data by the primary link; when the primary link is failed, the failure will be informed to relative nodes in the ring-based PON, and any node in the ring-based PON receives data by the backup link. According to the embodiments of this invention, the effect to network caused by single link failure in PON network can be reduced.
