Provided is a method of hydrophilizing a cellulose fiber while preventing coloration and lowering in strength of the same. A hydrophilization method characterized by comprising oxidizing a starting cellulose fiber in a neutral or acidic liquid reaction mixture which contains an N-oxyl compound and an oxidizing agent oxidizing aldehyde group.
