A method for calculating a cost function and a method for handling an occluded area during disparity estimation are provided to obtain the optimized cost function by efficiently using information of neighbor pixels during disparity estimation. It is determined whether a matching point overlapped with single matching exists(600). After disparity about the overlapped matched pixels is checked, a cost function is calculated about a corresponding pixel(604). Pixels in which overlapped matching occurs are set as candidate pixels(608). A visibility function value is assigned to process an occluded area(610). A cost function is calculated about the occluded pixels.
