The method involves transmitting a communication signal by an external communication device (4), and receiving a response signal of a motor vehicle (2). A response signal distance of the corresponding motor vehicle to the external communication device is determined depending on the received response signal. The response signal is assigned to the motor vehicle. The response signal of the motor vehicle is considered and not considered if the determined response signal fulfills and does not fulfill a given criterion, respectively. An independent claim is also included for a device for communication between a communication unit of a motor vehicle and an external communication device to the motor vehicle.
