The method involves controlling an automatic transmission (4) by an electronic gearbox control unit (6) and controlling an electronic engine control unit with a drive motor (2), which detects the current operating parameters. A warning signal is transferred to the electronic engine control unit (5) from the electronic gearbox control unit by recognition of an over-revving critical downshifting over a communication connection (7) as operating parameter. The electronic engine control unit is requested for execution of a soft rotational speed function. An independent claim is also included for a device for the execution of the method.
