The cylinder has a piston (18) guided into a housing (10) and moveable between two end positions. A locking unit locks the piston in one of the end positions or an intermediate position, which is arranged between the end positions. The locking unit has balls (40) or pins moved in a radial direction of the piston and cooperating with a groove (41). The ball is actuated by an elastic element e.g. O-ring (39), which is made of elastic element i.e. rubber. The balls or pins are provided at a circumference of the piston and/or housing in a distributed manner.
