The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (1) either in a normal mode, in which the maximum torque produced by the internal combustion engine is limited to a normal limiting value or in a loaded mode, in which the maximum torque produced is limited to a loading threshold, which is bigger than the normal limiting value. The internal combustion engine is adjusted from loaded mode into the normal mode. The loading limit value is increased again so much that the operating variable is lower in the normal operating mode. An independent claim is also included for a controlling device for an internal-combustion engine.
