The winder (4) has a pivotably movably supported spool frame (9) for rotatably holding a cross-wound spool (8). A drivable spool drum is provided for rotating the cross-wound spool. A device is provided for lifting the cross-wound spool from the spool drum and for breaking the cross-wound spool in a standstill condition, where the device engages at the cross-wound spool. A cross-wound spool brake device (13) has a brake roller (15) that is engagable at a surface (16) of the cross-wound spool such that the cross-wound spool is lifted and is broken.
