The method involves injecting water (51) into a combustion chamber (23) by using a self-igniting petrol engine (21) after using a self-ignition (49) of fuel in the combustion chamber of the petrol engine. The petrol engine is operated in a partial load range with homogeneous self-ignition. The water is injected during a set of injections of the fuel. The water is injected in an upper dead center of the self-ignition. The water is injected with a pressure more than 100 bar. An independent claim is also included for a computer program product with a program code unit, which is stored on a computer-readable data medium for operating a self-igniting petrol engine.
