The method involves applying a solution e.g. ethyl acetate (2), on a porous substrate e.g. paper (3), where one of the solution and the substrate has a fluorescent dye. A temporal intensity gradient of a fluorescent radiation (6) received by the substrate and the solution is measured, where the solution is a mixture of solvents. A penetration behavior of the solution into the substrate is determined by the measured temporal intensity gradient, where the solution penetrates into the substrate containing a fluorescent substance. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a penetration behavior of a solution into a substrate.
