The device has a measuring ruler (8), which includes a length scale and a crossbar (9) arranged at a right-angle and longitudinally-relocatable to the measuring ruler as a measuring bar (11). The cross bar has a indicator (10) for monitoring an orthogonality of the measuring ruler to a horizontal reference plane (7), where the indicator is a gas bubble (12) of a spirit level (13). The crossbar has two spirit levels (13, 14), which are arranged at right-angled to each other and parallel to the horizontal reference plane. An independent claim is also included for a measuring method for determination of height with respect to a horizontal reference.
