The method involves supplying an amount of electrical energy to an emitting electrode (6) over an operating time of an electrostatic separator (1) to generate a preset corona discharge. A part of the amount of electrical energy for corona discharge at the electrode is consumed to charge an exhaust gas particle. The supplied amount of energy is detected at two time points of the operating time. A change of the detected amount of energy is determined, and a signal, representing a condition e.g. separating efficiency, of the separator, is generated based on the determined change. An independent claim is also included for an electrostatic separator comprising an emitting electrode.
