The device (1) has an imaging optics (9) e.g. charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor, provided with a focal plane and an object table (11) for movement of an object (3) to be imaged relative to the focal plane. A control module is controlled by the object table for focusing an imaging device such that the object is positioned in a target position. The target position and a relative position of the focal plane and another focal plane are controlled for the object table such that the object is positioned in the former focal plane. An independent claim is also included for an autofocusing method for an imaging device.
