The coordinate measuring device has a probe head (7) with a probe (9) for mechanical contact of a device under test, where the probe is moved against a base portion of the probe head. A motorized drive is mechanically coupled with the base portion of the probe head, so that the base portion and the probe head are moved by the motorized drive. A control unit is provided for controlling the motorized drive, where a handle is manually operated by an operator. The handle is supported against the base portion of the probe head or against a part of the coordinate measuring device. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a coordinate measuring device.
