In apparatus for producing graphite articles, comprising a graphitization tank (1) for receiving presintered coke rod(s) within loose coke at sufficiently high temperature to convert the rod(s) into graphite, plus a rod cooling system, at least one tank side wall (3, 4) has individual, separate heat exchange plates (11) to promote abstraction of heat from the tanks after conversion of the coke into graphite.
