The device for masking a cylinder cover surface (4) of a cylinder bank (1) during a thermal coating of cylinder bores (2.1, 2.2, 2.3), comprises an insert plate (3) placed on the cylinder cover surface for covering the cylinder cover surface, through-holes intended in the insert plate and disposable over the cylinder bores, a receiving area (5) for steadying and accumulating surplus coating material and for avoiding re-welding the insert plate on the cylinder cover surface, and a peripheral rib (6) intended around the through-holes on a lower surface of the insert plate. The device for masking a cylinder cover surface (4) of a cylinder bank (1) during a thermal coating of cylinder bores (2.1, 2.2, 2.3), comprises an insert plate (3) placed on the cylinder cover surface for covering the cylinder cover surface, through-holes intended in the insert plate and disposable over the cylinder bores, a receiving area (5) for steadying and accumulating surplus coating material and for avoiding re-welding the insert plate on the cylinder cover surface, a peripheral rib (6) intended around the through-holes on a lower surface of the insert plate, and a guiding tube placed on the insert plate around the through-hole. The receiving area is intended at the lower surface of the insert plate rotating around each through-hole and is milled from the insert plate. A diameter (dD) of the through-hole is smaller than a diameter (dz) of the cylinder bores. The peripheral rib forms the receiving area of the insert plate on the cylinder cover surface, so that the lower surface is distanced from the cylinder cover surface. The rib is laterally distanced from the cylinder bores and is embossed into the insert plate. The receiving area is formed in a corner enclosed between the rib and the lower surface. The peripheral rib merges the through-holes, which are adjacent to each other, into one another. An edge of the through-holes is formed in the type of a cone in the direction of the cylinder bores downwardly pulled with an angle of incidence (alpha ) of 15-45[deg] . The receiving area is formed between the lower surface and the cone-like edge. An independent claim is included for a method for thermally coating a cylinder bores inserted in a cylinder bank.
