Four planetary gear sets (14,16,18,20) are provided. A shaft (42) interconnects the sun gear (14A) of first set with the transmission housing (50). Second shaft (44) interconnects the planet gear carriers (14B,16B,20B) of first, second and fourth sets. Third shaft (46) interconnects the ring gear (14C) of first set with the sun gear (16A) of second set and the ring gear (16C) of third set. Five torque-transmitting mechanisms (26,28,30,32,34) are engageable in combinations of two to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between input and output shafts (12,22).
