The method involves determining an expected value of a parameter such as vehicle height, vehicle width and number of wheels contacting a roadway (101), of a vehicle (105). An image of the vehicle is captured using video sensors (103a,103b), which are arranged along a road section. A value determined based on the image is compared with the expected value. An accident is determined, when the value determined based on the image deviates from the expected value. An alarm is triggered, when the accident is determined. An independent claim is also included for a system for detecting accident of a vehicle on a monitoring road section, comprising an evaluation device.
