The method involves computing a pressure in a region lying upstream of an inlet valve using thermodynamic and flow equations (68) at discrete time points during an engine work cycle, considering a fresh air charge (r1) of combustion chamber and detected engine rpm. Similarly the fresh air charge of combustion chamber can be computed considering pressure in the region and the detected engine rpm.
