Process for studying the genotype of Labrador dogs to determine possible fur color of their descendants comprises, in a sample of genetic material, examining the TYRP1 (= tyrosinase-1) gene for presence of the mutation Gln to termination at codon 331, from which the presence of recessive characteristics for black and/or brown coat color can be deduced.
