The method involves estimating movement of blocks of pixels of sub-sampled image forming sub-sampled image layers of lower and upper levels, from vertical scanning of pixel blocks of the layer according to respective scanning and inverse scanning directions. Movement vector estimated based on the scanning according to the direction and a movement vector of the block of pixels are selected as a spatial candidate movement of block of pixels of the layer of higher level, where movement of the blocks is estimated based on the scanning in the inverse direction applied to the layer of higher level. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for estimating symmetrical hierarchical movement of objects of successive video images, comprising a selection unit (2) a computer program stored on a storage medium for executing a method for estimating symmetrical hierarchical movement of objects of successive video images by a computer or microprocessor of video encoder of sub-sampled image layer.
