A culturing pool for algae comprises a circular pond for containing a controlled fermentation of marine or freshwater algae. Submerged air jets or nozzlesCmaybe arranged along a bed of the pond which pump controlled tangential bursts of air pressure into the water. The introduced air causes the water to rotate around the tank. FinsBmay be provided in the pond to cause vortices to form in the water so that the algae are mixed. The jets help to aerate the algae. Power for the process may be derived from photovoltaic panels with stored circulating capacity provided by a compressed air storage vessel.
