PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal-coated carbon material excellent not only in high heat conductivity but also in rigidity and surface smoothness and reducing thermal expansion coefficient, and a heat dissipation substrate using the metal-coated carbon material.;SOLUTION: The metal-coated carbon material is obtained by coating a carbon material with a metal, the heat conductivity of X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis directions is ≥160 W/(mK) and the heat conductivity of at least two directions out of the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis directions is ≥240 W/(mK). The Young's modulus of the metal-coated carbon material is ≥15 GPa at least in two directions out of the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis directions, the arithmetic average height of a contour curve indicating surface roughness is ≤1.6 μm at least on one surface of the coated metal layer and the maximum height is ≤6.3 μm.
