PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biological treatment method for minimizing the remodeling of an existing biological treatment apparatus without requiring a new space and enhancing a treatment capacity simply to prevent high-load treatment and bulking. PSOLUTION: The biological treatment apparatus has a high-load treatment tank 1 having an opening part 22 provided to the bottom or side surface thereof, a supply means 11 for a liquid to be treated, a return sludge supply means 12, an aeration means 4 and a high-load treated liquid discharge means 21. A high-load treatment unit 10 for performing high-load activated sludge treatment is immersed in an activated sludge treatment tank 2 having an aeration means 5 on the upstream side thereof, and the high-load treated liquid of the high-load treatment unit 10 is allowed to flow in the upstream side of the activated sludge treatment tank 2 and subjected to activated sludge treatment to form flocs. The mixed liquid in the activated sludge treatment tank 2 is subjected to solid-liquid separation and a part of the separated sludge is returned to the high-load treatment tank 1 as return sludge.
