PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photodetector capable of obtaining a proper image data corresponding to observation conditions in response to the change of the observation conditions of a sample automatically and a scanning type confocal microscope with the photodetector.;SOLUTION: An amplifier 16 has the amplifiers having two different amplification factors, and linear characteristics by one amplifier and broken-line characteristics by the two amplifiers are realized. A microscope control circuit 18 adjusts the amplification factor of the photodetector 15 so that the maximum levels of output signals from the amplifier 16 before and after the changeover of the characteristics are equalized when the changeover of the characteristics is indicated from an operator. Accordingly, the whole fluctuation of the brightness of an image with the changeover of the characteristics is avoided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
