An apparatus for monitoring the situation of slag discharge and method of monitoring the situation of slag discharge that would prevent the lowering of the accuracy of measuring the situation of slag discharge caused by a scale increase of coal gasification equipment, especially coal gasification furnace. There is disclosed an apparatus (1) for monitoring the situation of slag discharge provided in a furnace equipment (50) designed to process by dropping any molten slag generated in a furnace (51) through a slag hole (54) provided in a furnace bottom (52) into a cooling water outside the furnace. The apparatus is characterized in that in the cooling water, an underwater microphone (2) is disposed at distances approximately equal from a pair of slag taps (55,55) disposed opposite to each other for flow of the molten slag into the slag hole (54).
