The method involves determining a value of a given operating parameter, where the value represents control start of main injection. Another value of the operating parameter is determined and represents 50 percentage operating position of a normalized or non-normalized integral heating process. A geometrical intermediate value is calculated from the values. A combustion form rate is calculated as a reference parameter for controlling combustion of an internal combustion engine based on the intermediate value, where a crank angle value of a cylinder (1) is determined as the operating parameter. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling combustion of a direct injection diesel engine.
