The device has a probe (2) i.e. pipe-shaped needle, that is dipped into a fluid (7), where the needle is electrically conductive. A microcomputer (3) supplies a pulse to the probe using a pulse generator. The microcomputer measures and evaluates time until pulse exceeds a threshold value using a timer. A motor (5) moves the probe, and stops the probe, when a fluid surface (8) is detected. A resistor (1) and the probe form a resistor-capacitor circuit.
