The method involves overlapping opening intervals of an inlet valve (13) and an outlet valve (14) such that fresh air flows from the inlet valve to the outlet valve. The inlet and outlet valves are attached to a combustion chamber. Oxygen in exhaust gas is detected by a lambda sensor (23). A parameter e.g. pressure or temperature, characterizing actual extent of scavenging is determined based on amplitude of signal fluctuations of a lambda signal (61) of the lambda sensor. The opening intervals of the valves are adjusted depending on the determined parameter.
