The method involves adjusting different configurations of operating characteristics of a driver of a motor vehicle. Operation-relevant data of the vehicle is displayed on a freely programmable display surface (2) of the vehicle depending on the adjusted configurations. Speed of an engine and carbon dioxide emission of the vehicle are displayed as the data, and the adjusted configurations influence engine management, transmission management and/or vehicle management. Critical speed range of the engine is determined depending on the adjusted configurations. An independent claim is also included for a device for displaying information in a motor vehicle, comprising an interface.
