The friction ring has at least one friction surface with an at least partial coating. The coating is in the form of a layer of tungsten-based alloy, flame-sprayed at high speed directly onto the friction surface by a high-speed flame spray device (10). This coating may also contain chromium and/or nickel as part or all of the applied alloy, e.g. 20-35 wt% chromium and 5-15 wt% nickel.
