Preparation of organic and/or organic-inorganic fertilizer (X) containing hardy bacteria (B) that promote growth of plants comprises preparing an inoculum of (B); fermentation and formulation of the inoculum as a solid state product; and combining the resulting powder with the fertilizer. Independent claims are also included for: (1) fertilizer (X) prepared by the new method; (2) any (X) that contains fermented (B), formulated as a solid state material; (3) screening, for hardiness, bacteria (diazotrophes and able to dissolve phosphorus) that promote growth of plants; and (4) determining the level of bactericidal activity of biosolids used to prepare (X). ACTIVITY : Fertilizer. Maize was grown in a podzol (56% sand; 34% si 10% clay) in Quebec. When grown with application of a mixed organic-inorganic fertilizer at 3.8, 14 and 0.3 kg/hectare of nitrogen, phosphorous pentoxide and potassium oxide, respectively, the yield was 103% of that for a sample grown without any fertilizers. The same application of nutrients from a fertilizer inoculated with hardy soil bacteria gave a yield of 109%. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
