PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material which is inexpensively produced and allows production of a lithium secondary battery excellent in various battery properties in a balanced manner even when used at a high electrode density. PSOLUTION: A graphite powder is used having a tap density of not less than 0.80 g/cmSP3/SPand not more than 1.35 g/cmSP3/SP, a surface functional group amount, O/C value, of not less than 0 and not more than 0.01, a BET specific surface area of not less than 2.5 mSP2/SP/g and not more than 7.0 mSP2/SP/g, and a Raman R-value of not less than 0.02 and not more than 0.05.
