PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for suppressing spontaneous combustion of a carbonaceous substance by which spontaneous combustion of the carbonaceous substance can be suppressed for a long period of time without imposing loads on the environment and without expending considerable energy.;SOLUTION: The method for suppressing spontaneous combustion of the carbonaceous substance comprises: minute alga culture step of culturing minute algae by using CO₂ as a photosynthetic raw material; a minute alga-containing material production step of adjusting the concentration of minute algae at normal temperature to obtain a minute alga-containing material; and a spraying step of spraying the minute alga-containing material on coal.
