The present invention relates to a novel liquid biofertilizer of nitrogen fixing bacterial strain of Azospirillum brasilense, which fix atmospheric nitrogen under microaerophillic conditions with enhanced shelf life of 2 years and stress tolerance. The stress tolerance to different temperature and pH conditions was developed phenotypically without any genetic manipulation. The said strain is cultured in a medium containing malic acid as a carbon source, vitamin and trace elements to achieve high density cell growth with initial CFU count of 1010 and after one year not less than 108. The bioreactor parameters for said strain were optimized to achieve a high density cell growth and also to achieve a shelf life of 2 years at a wide temperature range from 10°C to 45°C and pH from 4.5 to 9.0.
