The invention relates to identification of a cis-acting diversification activator (DIVAC) that is necessary and sufficient for the activation of diversification in transcription units linked thereto. The invention provides a method for diversification of a target nucleic acid comprising introducing a genetic construct comprising the diversification activator into a recipient cell, wherein the diversification activator is linked to the target nucleic acid.
